Love knows we are truly interconnected. Love listens. Love forgives. Love loves.
This song is inspired by friendship and the power of that kind of love.
It’s about holding safe space for each other so we can lay our burdens down. We all have stuff we don’t like about ourselves, things we’ve done that we aren’t proud of or are straight up ashamed of. If we don’t ever talk about it, it is likely because we don’t feel we have the kind of safe space we need to let that stuff out (and we have likely justified it and made it work very well - thank you very much). We need safe space to brave territory that we are afraid of looking at, admitting to, or speaking about. We need safe space internally and externally. Listening with an open heart and mind creates safe space. Who creates the reality of punishment and blame, of guilt and shame? Who does it really serve to believe we are so separate from each other, that your suffering would not be mine? Separateness is how we feed the things we fear. We get sick when it doesn’t feel safe to fully express ourselves. I’d say we’re pretty sick. I mean, we are in a pandemic after all. What if we weren’t afraid of ourselves and our truth? What if we weren’t afraid of each other? What would it be like if we stopped defending ourselves as different and separate but instead recognize the importance of the unique gifts each of us brings to the table? What if we stop giving our energy to defending shame and blame and use that energy to create safe space for ourselves and each other? What will this winter be like if we know we are safe? What will that require? What will it be like to know we can gather warmth, a felt sense of connection, inspiration, and encouragement from our interconnectedness, our oneness? What will it be like to experience this kind of love?
